Myanmar Coup Updates 2021
In the early hours of 1 February 2021, the Myanmar military staged a coup, placing civilian leaders in detention, declaring a state of emergency, and taking hold of all levers of power. While the Myanmar military already enjoyed far reaching powers due to the 2008 Constitution, it now has complete control. This was illegal, illegitimate, and a major step back in the people’s struggle for a federal, democratic Myanmar. Opposition and resistance to the coup has been immediate and widespread. People from all sectors of Myanmar society have been on the streets, organizing and demonstrating against this military takeover. Many foreign nations and international bodies have also condemned the coup. The authorities have, in turn, responded with arrests, violence, internet shutdowns, and intimidation. It is hoped that this crucial turning point in Myanmar history can be a catalyst for structural, political reforms, abolishing the military-drafted 2008 Constitution, and establishing a federal democracy in which equality and human rights are enjoyed by all peoples of Myanmar.
As the situation develops, Progressive Voice is collecting and archiving statements, reports, laws, analysis, petitions and other relevant documents pertaining to the coup from various actors. This includes, but is not limited to, Myanmar civil society organizations, political parties, ethnic armed organizations, protest leaders, existing government ministries and bodies, the military and its newly formed military bodies, and international actors.
