Young people in Waingmaw, Kachin State, staged a drowning strike on March 17 against the Myanmar military dictatorship.
A young man from Waingmaw explained the purpose of the drowning strike.
“Today we are holding a drowning strike from Waingmaw youths. The purpose of the drowning strike is for example, it is neither appropriate to be teaching a drowning person how to swim nor telling to come grab your hands. The only way is to rescue a drowning person. Therefore, people in Myanmar are drowning and they need to be rescued/saved.”
Similar drowning protests have taken place in other parts of Myanmar.
