Statement Urging Political Parties to Avoid Being Used as Informants of Terrorist Junta

Dated 10 February, 2024
1. Terrorist military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, attempting to unjustly seize the power, met with the chairs, deputy chairs, and officials of political parties that had been registered under the military’s illegal political party registration law, and asked them to inform about the people who are opposing the military dictatorship. This could indicate that the military terrorist group is attempting to use political parties and their members as a support mechanism for military dictatorship.
2. Political parties are the organizations that represent people, training the politicians, promoting the political participation, forming the electoral governments, proposing, and implementing policies, raising the political awareness, and performing the responsibilities by contesting the elections.
3. The statement of the junta leader indicates that the terrorist junta disregards political parties’ mandates and responsibilities, trying to use the political party leaders and their members as the informants of terrorist military junta, attempting to use them as their support mechanism under so-called “Public Security and Public Defense System”, and portraying the political parties as the culprit of the history who have destroyed the country’s democracy.

4. Calling on political parties for maintaining their political integrity, we urge political party leaders and members who had registered under the military-appointed sham election commission to refrain from being used as informants against the will of the people, avoid being part of military oppression mechanism, and abstain from being portrayed as the culprit of the history by withdrawing the party registration, resigning from party membership, and to stay as the alienated party members.
