“Concern for President U Win Myint’s Well-being”

19 June 2023

We are deeply concerned about the distressing report regarding the deteriorating health of President U Win Myint of Myanmar, who has been placed on a urine tube while being held in Taungoo Prison under the control of the brutal military junta.

The responsibility for President U Win Myint’s declining health rests squarely on the genocidal military junta, and they must be held accountable for their brutal actions and the atrocities they have committed against the people of Myanmar. It is an unjust act to imprison a democratically elected President who represents the will of the people.

Over the past 27 months, the military junta in Myanmar has unjustly arrested more than 23,000 innocent civilians, including President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, whose 78th Birthday Anniversary is being observed today, June 19th, both in Myanmar and beyond. These same military generals are also responsible for the deaths of over 4,000 civilians and the destruction of more than 67,000 houses, including hospitals, schools, churches, and monasteries. Their relentless attacks on civilians have forced nearly 2 million people into desperate homelessness, pushed more than 18 million individuals to the brink of a humanitarian crisis, and subjected half the population of Myanmar to extreme poverty. Among the victims of the military junta’s reign of terror are children, women, the elderly, and disabled individuals who are particularly vulnerable.

We urgently call upon the international community, especially our neighbouring countries, to utilise their influence and take decisive action to end the immense suffering and destruction inflicted upon millions of innocent people in Myanmar. This can be achieved by withdrawing support for the genocidal military junta, known as the State Administrative Council (SAC), and by immediately recalling all diplomats and citizens associated with the military junta. Instead, we implore them to fully engage with the National Unity Government of Myanmar (NUG), the sole democratic representative of the people of Myanmar, to bring an end to this crisis once and for all.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sasa
Union Minister
Ministry of International Cooperation
National Unity Government
Republic of the Union of Myanmar
