France deplores the Burmese junta’s decision to ban around 40 political groups, including the National League for Democracy, the party headed by Aung San Suu Kyi. The ban is another step backwards when it comes to freedom of expression and assembly and testifies to the strategy of systematically dismantling the rule of law in Burma since the coup of 1 February 2021.
France reiterates its commitment to the establishment of political dialogue including the democratic opposition, an essential condition for any solution to resolve the crisis, and condemns the junta’s refusal to listen to the will of the Burmese people. It will continue to stand resolutely alongside the people in their fight for justice and democracy.
