The Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF) delegation concluded a successful advocacy and relationship-building trip to Canada. The delegation included Daw Zin Mar Aung, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the National Unity Government of Myanmar and a member of the SCEF Secretariat, Saw Nimrod of Karen National Union and Neineh Plo of the Interim Executive Council of Karenni State, who are also SCEF Foreign Affairs members. U Kyaw Zaw, Presidential Advisor to the National Unity Government also joined the delegation in Canada.
In Canada’s capital Ottawa, the delegation had productive meetings with Canadian politicians including the Honourable Rob Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shadow Ministers and Members of Parliament Garnett Genuis and Adam Chambers, who are the representatives of the Parliamentary Friends of a Democratic Burma. The delegation and Canadian officials had friendly discussions and identified opportunities to deepen ties, areas of cooperation, effective humanitarian assistance and support for a federal democratic union in Myanmar. It reaffirmed Canada’s deep concern over the continued violence against civilians. In addition, the delegation had discussions in Ottawa with not-for-profit organizations and identifies ways to collaborate in providing humanitarian assistance and federalism in Myanmar.
In Toronto, the delegation had a very good meeting with Hon. Bob Rae, former Canada Permanent Representative to the UN and former Premier of Ontario Province, at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, the University of Toronto and exchanged opinions on political developments, federal and humanitarian issues. Furthermore, the delegation conducted a roundtable discussion with the Myanmar Policy and Community Knowledge (MyPACK) Hub at the University of Toronto.
The delegation also conducted successful Town Halls with Myanmar diaspora communities in London, and Toronto in Canada east, and Vancouver in Canada west.
The Steering Council trip underscores the importance of Canada’s support for humanitarian assistance, federal democracy and human rights in Myanmar and strengthening collaboration.
