365 days of internet shutdown in Kachin State

Beginning on July 21, 2024, mobile/internet services across all townships in Kachin State were shut down. As of today, July 21, 2025, this internet blackout has reached a full one year (365 days).

Throughout this one-year period, the military junta has consistently and systematically restricted the flow of accurate information to the public in Kachin State. Not only has access to information been severely limited, but the freedom to produce and disseminate news has also been completely suppressed.

Following a year of information blackout, Kachin State has become one of the regions most heavily affected by human rights violations. The junta has carried out extrajudicial killings of civilians, launched heavy artillery attacks resulting in numerous injuries and deaths, and looted civilian-owned property through threats and intimidation. These violations have been most widespread in Hpakant, Waingmaw, and Bhamo townships.

The actions of the military regime represent a serious and widespread infringement on the fundamental human rights (UDHR) of the civilian population. Therefore, KHRW, our organization strongly condemns these acts of repression and violence.
