Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, visited India from 30 May to 3 June at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the visit, he reportedly met with Indian President Droupadi Murmu, the Prime Minister, and business leaders. Justice For Myanmar, revolutionary forces, and civil society organizations strongly criticized the trip, arguing that the Indian government’s invitation granted Min Aung Hlaing undeserved political legitimacy. They called on India to immediately cease cooperation with the military junta and to stand firmly with the people of Myanmar who are resisting authoritarian rule. Meanwhile, President José Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste proposed at the Shangri-La Dialogue held on 30 May, that ASEAN appoint a retired four-star general as a special envoy to facilitate the implementation of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus. Additionally, on 3 June, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated at the U.S. Senate budget hearing that China’s influence and control over Myanmar have made it difficult to find a practical solution to the country’s political crisis. He also noted that the United States is seeking to establish at least some level of engagement with actors who have the potential to bring about meaningful change in Myanmar.
