Massacres conducted by the military
From January to March 2026, at least 37 incidents of massacres were committed by the military junta and armed revolutionary forces across 30 townships, resulting in at least 426 civilian deaths. Among them, the majority of massacre incidents was military airstrikes with 23 incidents. The military village raids were reported to be the second highest with four incidents while the military’s paramotor attacks were reported as the third highest with three incidents.
Meanwhile, the highest number of civilian deaths occurred in Sagaing Region with 201 deaths, followed by Magway with 55, Kachin with 53, and Bago (East) with 36. Sagaing Region was also observed as the region with
the highest number of incidents with 17, followed by Magway with five incidents.
Massacres resulted from airstrikes
During the reporting period, airstrikes conducted by the military junta attributed to the highest number of massacres and civilian deaths across the country. At least 23 incidents of civilian-targeted aerial attacks carried out by the junta were reported in seven regions, resulting in at least 250 civilian deaths. Among these, 11 incidents in Sagaing were recorded as the highest, resulting in at least 90 civilian deaths. Magway followed with approximately 50 civilian deaths during four incidents. In Kachin, Rakhine, and Chin, two incidents each were recorded as the third highest, resulting in at least 94 civilian deaths.
Among these incidents, the one with the highest number of civilian casualties occurred in Bhamo Township, Kachin Region. On 10 March, the military junta carried out airstrikes targeting gold mining sites in the Sinkhan area of Bhamo Township using Y-12 aircraft and fighter jets, resulting in the deaths of 30 civilians.
The second deadliest incident involving civilian casualties occurred in Mindon Township, Magway Region. On 1 March, the military junta carried out a bombing attack with fighter jets on a location near a village in Mindon Township where civilian trucks were parked, resulting in the deaths of a total of 34 civilians.
Massacres resulted from military village raids
In this category, the military along with Pyu Saw Htee militia committed various atrocities such as arrest, arson, rape, and killing of civilian hostages. From January to March 2026, village raids conducted by military columns were the second most cause of massacre incidents leading to high casualties. At least four massacres were reported across the country, resulting in 22 civilian deaths. There were two incidents in Mandalay, one incident each in Bago (East) and Tanintharyi resulting in civilian deaths of 10 in Mandalay, five in Bago (East) and seven in Tanintharyi.
On 27 February, a military column of the junta arrested and executed seven civilians in a village in Thayetchaung Township, Tanintharyi Region. In addition, on 18 March, another junta military column arrested and killed five civilians from a village in Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Region.
