Between 1 and 7 May 2026, there were at least 193 incidents of military operations and civilian-targeted attacks across the country. Among them, at least 68 incidents were military operations, and 125 incidents were civilian-targeted attacks.
On 30 April, the military junta announced that State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi had been transferred from secret detention to house arrest. On 3 May, the National League for Democracy (NLD) declared that this move was not a positive political step but merely a maneuver to seek political legitimacy through a sham election. The NLD urged the international community, including ASEAN, to avoid premature engagement with the junta. On 7 May, ASEAN Secretary-General Mr. Kao Kim Hourn stated that ASEAN foreign ministers had agreed to reconnect with Myanmar after five years of severed relations by arranging online communication with the junta’s foreign minister. However, ASEAN member states remain divided over the Myanmar issue: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste continue to uphold the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, while Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia favor re-engagement with the junta. Prior to this announcement, on May 5, the Thai Foreign Minister — who has close ties with the junta — also said that he had invited Myanmar’s junta-appointed
foreign minister to meet with ASEAN regional foreign ministers.
