Joint Statement on the Military Junta’s Sham Election

1. The military junta is planning to conduct an illegal and illegitimate sham election in a phased manner on December 28, 2025, and January 11, 2026, with the objective of perpetuating its oppressive regime.
2. The military junta is an illegal and unlawful organization that seized power by disregarding the results of the 2020 General Election through violating the provisions of the 2008 Constitution, which they themselves unilaterally promulgated.
3. The military junta constitutes a group of international criminals who not only are blatantly perpetrating international crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide against civilians nationwide on a daily basis, but are also deeply entrenched in transnational organized crimes, such as online scams and illicit drug trafficking.
4. Thus, this military junta does not have any legitimate authority to hold an election, either legally or based on the will of the people.
5. Additionally, to facilitate the sham election, the military junta has enacted unjust laws, arbitrarily arrested and detained individuals opposing the election, and committed enforced disappearances. Various forms of intimidation are being used to coerce public participation in voting. Therefore, an illegal sham election—that emerges from such ways of suppression on the people’s free will—can in no way be considered a “free and fair election,” and any resulting body or entity will not bring representation for, by, and of the people. It is an act of illegal seizing sovereign power.
6. This illegal sham election will not resolve the country’s political crisis but will instead exacerbate the existing problems and move the country further from the process of building a genuine Federal Democratic Union based on “democracy, self-determination, and equality.” Moreover, it will only enable the military junta to continue committing heinous human rights violations.
7. Therefore, the Mandalay Interim Governing Council (MIGC) and the Sagaing Federal Unit Interim Government (SFUIG) completely reject and oppose the sham election that will be conducted by the military junta.
8. We solemnly urge countries around the world to recognize the ground reality of our country and to completely refrain from recognizing or cooperating with the military junta’s illegal sham election.
9. Furthermore, we strongly urge the international community to recognize and support the National Unity Government (NUG) and the Federal Units and State Governments, which have emerged in accordance with the people’s will through the coordinated efforts of various revolutionary stakeholders to build a genuine Federal Democratic Union.
10. We earnestly call upon the entire public to oppose and reject this “illegal sham election” through all forms of civil disobedience and resistance and to continue participating in the anti-dictatorship movement in any way possible from their respective positions.
