Human Rights Day: Switzerland’s Statement on the Upcoming Elections in Myanmar

On Human Rights Day, Switzerland expresses its deep concern over the human rights situation in Myanmar and the current conditions surrounding the upcoming elections, which fall short of international standards for a free, fair and inclusive electoral process. Armed conflict, humanitarian crisis and widespread insecurity hinder meaningful public participation across the country. Restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, limits on independent media and internet access, along with intimidation and arbitrary detentions are incompatible with genuine democratic engagement.

The exclusion of some newly formed and previously established political parties risks further polarization at a time when inclusive dialogue is urgently needed. Switzerland calls on all actors to refrain from violence against civilians, including candidates, voters and electoral personnel, and to take concrete steps before, during and after the elections to advance reconciliation, peace and democracy. In this regard, Switzerland welcomes the recent release of arbitrarily detained persons.

Switzerland calls for respect for international humanitarian and human rights law, the cessation of hostilities — including airstrikes and drone attacks targeting civilians — and the release of all arbitrarily detained persons, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and U Win Myint. It further urges all stakeholders to engage in meaningful and inclusive dialogue. These steps are essential to restore trust and stability.

Switzerland reaffirms its support for efforts to promote an inclusive political process, restore peace and uphold human rights in Myanmar. It stands ready to work with local, regional, national and international partners to support dialogue, humanitarian access and the aspirations of the people of Myanmar for a peaceful, democratic and prosperous future.
