“UNICEF is deeply alarmed by reports that at least ten children have been killed in airstrikes in Myanmar in less than a week.

“According to reports, five airstrikes in Shan State, Chin State and Magway Region in 5-6 September killed 24 civilians, including at least 10 children. The airstrikes also injured at least eight children and destroyed a community-based learning centre.

“As Myanmar’s conflict rages on, children and their families are bearing the brunt of these attacks. Children are being killed in the very places where they should feel safe, including their places of learning and in their communities. Every child killed or injured causes intense grief for their families.

“As attacks intensify, we fear this pattern will only continue. In 2024 alone, at least 600 children have been killed or injured in Myanmar.

“UNICEF reminds all parties that the killing and maiming of children and attacks on schools are grave violations. Children and civilians must be protected at all times.”
