On 12 May, in Kunming, China, representatives of the military junta and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) held negotiations mediated by China. During the talks, the junta requested TNLA forces to withdraw from Namtu, Namhkan, Monglong, and Mongngawt towns, which had been seized during the first wave of Operation 1027, and stated that TNLA should only remain in Namhsan and Mantong townships that the two areas designated as Ta’ang Self-Administered Zone under the 2008 Constitution. At present, TNLA maintains control over Monglong, Mongngawt, Namtu, Namhkan, Namhsan, and Mantong. From the towns captured in the second wave of Operation 1027 — Hsipaw, Kyaukme, Nawnghkio, Mogoke, and Mongmit— the junta has retaken Hsipaw, Kyaukme, and Nawngcho, while Mogoke and Mongmit were handed back to the junta in October 2025 under a bilateral agreement. Meanwhile, on 19 May, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister stated that he urged the military junta to extend the Peace Call for at least six months or indefinitely during his visit to Nay Pyi Taw. Despite the junta’s declared ceasefire, it continues to carry out airstrikes and bombings targeting civilians.
