At A Glance on Armed Struggles (16 January – 22 January)

Between 16 and 22 January, there were a total of 211 incidents of armed clashes and civilian-targeted attacks across the country. Among them, at least 84 incidents were armed operations and 127 incidents were civilian-targeted attacks.

The military junta’s Union Election Commission (UEC) announced on 25 December that the third phase of its sham election will be held on 25 January across 63 townships. The first phase, conducted on 28 December 2025, in 102 townships, resulted in the junta-aligned Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) winning 102 seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw, 21 in the Amyotha Hluttaw, and 108 in Regional and State Hluttaws. The second phase took place on 11 January 2026, across 100 townships, with USDP Central Executive Committee member U Maung Myint stating that the party secured victories in 76 of those townships. The junta has declared that parliament will convene in March following the conclusion of these elections, with a new government set to take office in April. Meanwhile, junta-controlled newspapers reported on 21 January that 404 civilians—324 men and 80 women—have now been prosecuted under election laws.
