792 women were killed due to airstrikes and ground attacks by illegal military junta

Almost five years have passed since the illegal military junta attempted the coup on February 1, 2021. Throughout these years, the illegal military junta have continued to commit various forms of severe human rights violations that amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. For women, due to the various forms of human rights violations that they face on a daily basis, including conflict­ related sexual violence, many have lost their lives. As of 2025, 792 women have been killed. The reported data has been monitored and collected from reliable media sources by Burmese Women’s Union (BWU). However, BWU encounters numerous obstacles when accessing data and information; therefore, the actual figures may be much higher on the ground.

Based on BWU data monitoring from various reliable media and ground sources. (792) women were killed across the country in 2025. Among them, (621) women were killed by the military airstrikes, (102) women lost their lives due to the military artillery shelling that targeted civilian homes and villages, and (39) women died due to extrajudicial killing, (13) was killed by landmine, (6) women were killed by fire ,(5) women were killed due to conflict-related sexual violence, (3) women were died due to lack of medication and another (3) women were killed by crossfire.

(815) women were wounded , (576) women were wounded due to aerial bombardment by the military, (164) women were injured by the military artillery shelling and (41) women were injured by landmine ,(26) women were physical injured due to conflict-related sexual violence, (5) women were injured by physical totured, (2) women were wounded due to crossfire, and (1) woman was injured by extrajudicial killing.

Based on the data that was monitored and collected by BWU, the number of women fatalities in 2025 was (217) from Sagaing Region (123) from Mandalay Region, (ll9) from Rakhine State, (81) from Shan State, (69) from Magway Region.Therefore, Sagaing Region recorded the highest number of women killed in 2025.

BWU calls for urgent action to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the International Community to stop grave human rights violations by bringing the perpetrators (the illegal military) to account, to end impunity, and ensure justice and remedies for the victims and survivors. The people of Myanmar urgently need your resolute support and concrete action to end the military’s atrocities

  • Condemn the military’s Sham election and refuse to recognize the criminal military junta as a legitimate government, and withdraw investment, support, or any kind of cooperation that results in the flow of financial support to the criminal military junta.
  • Enforce targeted sanctions specifically blocking arms and aviation fuel from reaching the criminal military junta and increasing pressure on the criminal military junta to stop all kinds of atrocities targeting civilians.
  • ASEAN and international community must work to hold Min Aung Hlaing and its military junta accountable under international law for their genocide against Rohingya, and war crimes and crimes against humanity against the people of Myanmar.
  • Engage in coordinated advocacy with different stakeholders such as EROs, the interim government, CSOs, women, LGBTQIA+, and human rights organizations through regional and international platforms.
