Five years ago today, Burmese troops began carrying out a campaign of violence against the Rohingya minority, resulting in a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale and the displacement of nearly a million people. The political crisis that began with the coup d’état on February 1, 2021, has aggravated the security situation and made the prospect of the refugees’ return more remote.

Burmese security forces continue to carry out acts of violence, and France calls for their immediate, unconditional halt.

Working with its European partners and under the auspices of the UN, France will continue its humanitarian commitment to displaced persons and refugees. We demand unhindered humanitarian access to vulnerable populations. We commend the role played by Bangladesh, which has continuously shown its solidarity by taking in hundreds of thousands of people.

France will continue to advocate for ending impunity for those responsible for crimes committed in Burma against the civilian population.

France supports efforts by ASEAN and its Special Envoy to Myanmar to establish a political dialogue process that includes the democratic opposition, which is essential to ending the crisis in that country.
