France condemns in the strongest possible terms the prison sentence handed down today against State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi at the end of arbitrary court proceedings.

This decision represents a new attempt by the military junta to undermine the legitimacy of democratically elected leaders, in total contradiction with the expressed will of the Burmese people. It is another sign of the military’s contempt for the basic principles of the rule of law since the coup d’état on February 1, 2021.

As France and its EU partners have consistently emphasized, this crisis can be resolved only through a political dialogue that includes all stakeholders, and first and foremost, the democratic opposition forces. France reiterates its call for the immediate, unconditional release of all arbitrarily detained prisoners and an end to the acts of violence carried out by Burmese security forces.
