Statement by the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) on International Human Rights Defenders Day

As the world observes International Human Rights Defenders Day, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) honours thousands of women and men in Burma who risk their freedom and lives every day in their steadfast pursuit of justice. This day commemorates the adoption of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders in 1998. It acknowledges the crucial work of those who document abuses, support survivors, organize communities, and speak out against oppression, even when it entails threats, imprisonment, or violence.

For three decades, HURFOM has collaborated with human rights defenders in Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi Region. Since the attempted coup, local activists, village leaders, youth organizers, and community documenters have become the backbone of life-saving efforts in hard-to-reach areas. Among their many responsibilities, they collect evidence of airstrikes and ground assaults, organize safe passage for those at risk, and ensure displaced families receive food, medicine, and shelter. Many continue their work while on the run, separated from their families or living under constant surveillance.

A recent joint report, Our Shared Responsibility, co-authored by 18 Civil Society Organisations, was released on 30 September 2025, highlighting how civil society across the country is strengthening local resilience for a future federal democratic Burma. HURFOM’s contribution to this report describes how our network of human rights defenders and community-based partners provides emergency assistance to internally displaced people, collaborates with ethnic resistance organisations and local administrations, and builds trust with communities through transparent, long-term engagement. It also notes the increasing risks faced by defenders and the importance of flexible, sustained support to enable them to continue their work safely.

“Today, we honour the defenders who stand on the frontlines of truth and justice. Despite the junta’s brutal violations, they continue to document suffering, protect their communities, and raise the voices of those who are suffering. Across the country, these brave individuals are rallying calls for action and protection of their villages and are the guardians of human rights. We hold deep respect for their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.

We especially recognize women human rights defenders whose strength and dedication inspire us all. Their resilience in the face of violence, intimidation, and discrimination is not only remarkable; it is a powerful reminder that justice is built through persistence and compassion. Their work matters, and their courage holds a place of honour in our shared struggle,” said Nai Aue Mon, Program Director of HURFOM.

Furthermore, on this Human Rights Defenders Day, HURFOM honours the bravery of those in southern Burma who continue to document violations, speak for the disappeared, and support survivors of violence. We urge international and regional actors to recognise these defenders as essential partners, ensure their protection, and direct resources straight to local networks that keep communities alive and defend basic rights. HURFOM reaffirms its dedication to stand with human rights defenders, amplify their voices, and work towards a future where their efforts are no longer met with fear and retaliation, but instead with respect, protection, and justice.
