Attacks on Health Care in Myanmar: 22 January-04 February 2025

Insecurity Insight identified 1574 incidents of violence against or obstruction of health care in Myanmar since the military coup on 01 February 2021 and 22 December 2024. In these incidents, health facilities were damaged 348 times and taken over for non-medical purposes on at least 202 occasions. In addition, 136 health workers were killed and 836 arrested.

From 2023, incidents involving explosive weapons use impacting health care have increased with high numbers recorded in Sagaing region during armed clashes between resistance forces and the Myanmar junta. Since January 2024, Myanmar junta airstrikes have damaged health facilities 15 times in Rakhine’s Mrauk-U, Sittwe, and Thandwe districts amid offensives against the Arakan Army. From March 2024, incidents involving explosive weapons use impacting health care also increased in Mandalay‘s Pyin Oo Lwin district amid junta-resistance clashes.
