Global human rights network removes junta-controlled MNHRC

The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI)—one of the largest human rights networks worldwide—has finally removed the Myanmar military junta’s Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) from its human rights network on 31 December 2024, paving the way for establishing a new and independent national human rights institution (NHRI).

On 18 February 2025, the CSO Working Group on Independent National Human Rights Institution (Burma/Myanmar) (Working Group) will host an online press conference to share updates on progress, challenges, and future priorities, while also addressing significant developments at both national and international levels. The panelists will discuss key topics including the draft of the Union Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Bill and GANHRI’s recent decision. The press conference will also aim to enhance public awareness of the Working Group’s continued work to establish a new national human rights institution that is in line with the Paris Principles.
