Villagers in three townships gather to oppose dam building on Shan State rivers

Local villagers and youth in Hsipaw and Kyaukme, northern Shan State, and in Kunhing, southern Shan State, gathered at river banks to hold blessing ceremonies and call for a halt to dam building on the occasion of the International Day of Action for Rivers.

On March 14, about 200 villagers from Namma village tract in Hsipaw township gathered at the Namma riverbank holding banners with slogans such as “May our river flow freely forever”, “May Shan State Rivers flow freely” and “May Shan State people be free” in Shan and Burmese languages. Villagers also carried out a traditional blessing ceremony and released a raft to symbolize their resistance to damming the Namma, a sub-tributary of the Namtu/Myitnge river.

In Kyaukme township, about 30 young people gathered at the Namtu river bank, holding up a signboard calling for a stop to dam building on all Shan State rivers including the Namtu.

The Namtu is one the main rivers in northern Shan State, relied on by local farmers for transportation and agriculture. Several of its tributaries have become silted up and shallow due to extensive coal mining.

Despite intensification of conflict between resistance forces and the SAC military regime in townships along the Namtu in recent months, construction of two large hydropower dams on the river have been continuing: the Upper Yeywa dam at Taung Che village, Kyaukme township, and the Namtu dam at Tadae village in Hsipaw township.

In Kunhing, about 100 local people also gathered on the bank of the Salween river to mark the International Day of Action for Rivers.

အပြည်ပြည်ဆိုင်ရာမြစ်ချောင်းများနေ့တွင် ရှမ်းပြည်အတွင်းရှိ မြို့နယ် ၃ ခု၌ ဒေသခံများစုစည်းကာ ရေကာတာ စီမံကိန်းများ ရပ်တန့်ရန် နှင့် မြစ်ချောင်းများအတွက် ဆုတောင်းပွဲကျင်းပပြုလုပ်ခဲ့

အပြည်ပြည်ဆိုင်ရာမြစ်ချောင်းများနေ့အထိမ်းအမှတ်အဖြစ် ရှမ်းပြည်မြောက်ပိုင်း သီပေါမြို့နယ်၊ ကျောက်မဲမြို့နယ် နှင့် ရှမ်းပြည်တောင်ပိုင်း ကွန်ဟိန်မြို့နယ်တို့တွင် ဒေသခံပြည်သူများနှင့် လူငယ်များသည် မြစ်ချောင်းများနံဘေး တွင်စုစည်းကာ ရှမ်းပြည်အတွင်းရှိရေကာတာစီမံကိန်းများရပ်တန့်ရန်နှင့် မြစ်ချောင်းများရေရှည်တည်တံ့ကာ လွတ်လပ် စွာစီးဆင်းနိုင်စေရန် ဆုတောင်းပွဲများကို ကျင်းပပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ကြပါသည်။

မတ်လ ၁၄ ရက်နေ့တွင် ရှမ်းပြည်မြောက်ပိုင်း သီပေါမြို့ နမ္မကျေးရွာအုပ်စုမှ ဒေသခံပြည်သူ ၂၀၀ ခန့်သည် နမ္မမြစ်အနီးတွင် “ကမ္ဘာတည်သရွေ့ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ရဲ့ မြစ်တွေလွတ်လပ်စွာစီးဆင်းနိုင်ပါစေ“ ၊“ရှမ်းပြည်ကမြစ်တွေလွတ် လပ် ပါစေ ရှမ်းပြည်သူတွေလွတ်လပ်ပါစေ“အစရှိသည့် သျှမ်းမြန်မာ နှစ်ဘာသာဆိုင်း ဘုတ်များကိုင်ဆောင်ကာစု ၀ေးခဲ့ကြသည်။ထို့နောက်ဒေသခံပြည်သူများသည် ရှမ်းရိုးရာထုံးတမ်းစဥ်လာများနှင့် အညီ မြစ်ချောင်းများအတွက် ဆုတောင်းပွဲကို ကျင်းပပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ကာ နမ္မတူမြစ်၏မြစ်လက်တက်ဖြစ်သောနမ္မမြစ်ထဲသို့ ဖောင်မျောကာ နမ္မမြစ် တွင်ရေကာတာတည်ဆောက်ခြင်းကိုကန့်ကွက်မှုအားပြသခဲ့သည်။

အလားတူရှမ်းပြည်မြောက်ပိုင်း ကျောက်မဲမြို့တွင်လည်း မတ်လ ၁၄ ရက်၌ဒေသခံလူငယ် ၃၀ ခန့်သည် နမ္မတူ မြစ်(ဒုဌ၀တီမြစ်)ကမ်းဘေးတွင် စုဝေးကာ နမ္မတူမြစ်အပါအ၀င် ရှမ်းပြည်အတွင်းတည်ဆောက်နေသော ရေကာ တာ များကိုရပ်တန့်ရန် ဆိုင်းဘုတ်များဖြင့် ဆန္ဒထုတ်ဖော်ခဲ့ကြပါသည်။

နမ္မတူမြစ်သည် ရှမ်းပြည်မြောက်ပိုင်း၏အဓိကမြစ်တခုဖြစ်ပြီး ဒေသခံ တောင်သူလယ်သမားများ၏ စိုက်ပျိုးရေးနှင့် သယ်ယူပို့ဆောင်ရေးအတွက် အဓိကအားထားရာဖြစ်သည်။မြောက်များစွာသော၎င်း၏ မြစ်လက်တက်များသည် ကျောက်မီးသွေးတူးဖော်မှုကြောင့် တိမ်ကောလာပြီဖြစ်သည်။

လွန်ခဲ့သည့်လများမှစတင်ကာ နမ္မတူမြစ်တစ်လျောက်ရှိမြို့များတွင် စစ်ကောင်စီနှင့် တော်လှန်ရေး အဖွဲ့များ ကြား ပဋိပက္ခများပြင်းထန်လာသော်လည်း ကျောက်မဲမြို့နယ် တောင်ခြေရွာရှိ အထက်ရဲရွာရေကာတာစီမံကိန်းနှင့် သီပေါမြို့ မိုးတေကျေးရွာအနီးရှိ နမ္မတူရေကာတာစီမံကိန်း တည်ဆောက်မှုများမှာ ဆက်လက်လည်ပတ် လျက် ရှိသည်။

ရှမ်းပြည်တောင်ပိုင်း ကွန်ဟိန်မြို့တွင်လည်း မတ်လ ၁၄ ရက်နေ့၌ ဒေသခံများ 100 ခန့်သည် အပြည်ပြည်ဆိုင်ရာ မြစ်ချောင်း များနေ့အထိမ်းအမှတ်အဖြစ်စုဝေးခဲ့ကြသည်။
