Statement (3/ 2024)

13 February 2024

Statement on the military junta’s effort to implement the conscription law
1. The illegitimate junta has been declared as a “Terrorist Group” by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) which represents the Union Parliament with the mandate coming from the democratic will of the people. Not only do they lack the legal mandate to enact the conscription law, but their concerted effort to implement the law also represents ‌a clear and blatant disregard of the recommendations of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (2669) and the ASEAN five-point consensus.
2. In addition, this is another piece of evidence that shows that the military junta is ready to commit on a wider scale international war crimes and crimes against humanity that they have been perpetrating.
3. As a result, this has created an additional threat to regional stability and security.
4. Therefore, the National Unity Government urges the United Nations, ASEAN, and leaders of the region and the world to take measures as soon as possible to effectively prevent the actions of the military junta.
