Statement on the Invitation Extended to Illegitimate Junta to Attend Informal Discussion on Myanmar Issue by Thailand’s caretaker government
The National Unity Government expresses disappointment at Thailand’s caretaker government’s decision to extend an invitation to the Foreign Minister of the illegitimate junta for an informal discussion on Myanmar Issue, scheduled to be held between 18 and 19 June, 2023 in Thailand.
Inviting the illegitimate junta to this discussion will not contribute to the resolution of Myanmar’s political crisis; instead, it will undermine Myanmar people’s struggles for human rights, justice, and democracy, further complicating the problem. The resolution of Myanmar’s political problem can only be achieved through the inclusive participation of all stakeholders who could genuinely represent the will of Myanmar people.
Furthermore, extending such an invitation would not only be perceived as endorsing the military’s daily oppressive actions against its own people, which employ the most extreme and brutal methods, but it would also demonstrate a disregard for the will of the people of the neighbouring country. It will be seen by the people of our country as unacceptable interference in our internal matters and as blatant breach of ASEAN principles. Therefore, we strongly oppose the invitation extended to the illegitimate junta to attend the discussion.
We call upon Thailand’s caretaker government’s Foreign Minister to call off this ill-conceived and ill-prepared meeting and we call all invited countries not to participate if invited. Please, do not make matters in our country worse than they already are. Do not encourage and endorse illegitimate military junta to increase level of violence and to continue their war against the people.
In this regard, we appeal to Thailand’s caretaker government to engage with all relevant stakeholders including the National Unity Government and Ethnic Resistance Organizations which genuinely uphold the will of Myanmar people and have actively pursued the restoration of democratic values in Myanmar. Such engagements will help foster cooperation in border security, promote stability and peace, and enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.
