Situation Update in Shan State (January to February 2023)

Highlights & Key Messages

Intensified armed clashes between the military junta and people’s defence forces (PDFs) in Northern Shan State resulted in an increased number of IDPs. In January and February 2023, a total of 6 casualties were reported including: 4 men and 2 women, and a total of 13 injuries were reported including: 10 men and 3 women.

Northern Shan State

  • The military junta and a PDF clashed in Kyaukme and Hsipaw Townships.
    Bomb blasts and explosions resulted in 2 casualties in Lashio Township, and 6 injuries in Lashio and Muse Townships.
  • The military junta indiscriminately fired gunshots, resulting in 1 injury in Nawngkhio Township, and damaged civilian houses in Muse Township.

Southern Shan State

  • The military junta indiscriminately fired gunshots, resulting in 1 casualty in Inlay, Taunggyi Township.
    The military junta indiscriminately fired gunshots and damaged a church in Pekhon Township.
  • The military junta indiscriminately fired gunshots in Panglaung/Pinlaung and Moebye Townships, and more people were displaced.
  • Bomb blasts and explosions resulted in 2 casualties and 2 injuries in Moebye Township.

Eastern Shan State

  • Bomb blasts and explosions resulted in 5 injuries in Tachileik Township.
