The Situation in Myanmar (Deregistration of the National League for Democracy) (Statement by Press Secretary ONO Hikariko)
  1. On March 29, the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was deregistered, under the Political Parties Registration Law announced by the current Myanmar “regime” on January 26.
  2. The Government of Japan has consistently urged the Myanmar military to faithfully work towards a peaceful resolution of the situation. We express serious concern that further exclusion of the NLD from the political process will make it even more difficult to improve the situation.
  3. The Government of Japan strongly urges the Myanmar military to immediately release NLD leaders, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and to show a path towards a peaceful resolution of the situation in a manner that includes all relevant parties.
  4. In addition, we express strong concern about the intensification of attacks by the Myanmar military since the extension of the state of emergency on February 1, 2023. We once again strongly urge the Myanmar military to immediately stop the violence.
