Joint Statement: Call for freedom of expression in Myanmar and the immediate release of Japanese journalist, Mr. Yuuki Kitazumi

PEN International & The Japan P.E.N. Club joint statement

Mr. Yuuki Kitazumi, a Japanese journalist living in Myanmar, was arrested at his home by security authorities.

He was reported to have been transferred to the notorious Insein prison in Yangon.

We call on Myanmar’s armed forces to immediately stop the violent acts against its own people and to release all detained peaceful protesters from prison immediately and unconditionally.

We call for freedom of expression and demand the protection of local and international journalists and reporters in Myanmar.

We urge the Japanese government and the international community to take immediate action to ensure the safety of Mr. Kitazumi.
