Statement on Recent Detainees in Relation to the Military Coup News Updated on 5 Feb 2021

AAPP would like to update you to developments on political detainees in relation to the coup by the Burma military on 1 February.

On 5 February NLD stalwart U Win Htein was detained and charged under Section 124(a) for “sedition” by the Burma military. Win Htein is 79 years-old and is in poor health due to long sentences in prison during the military regime.

It has also been verified that 2 police officers were detained due to activism (CSO detainees) through Facebook posts against the military coup on 3 February. Previously unverified Saw Oakkar Oo was arrested on 4 February and charged 5 February under the Peaceful Assembly and Peaceful Procession Law and Natural Disaster Management Law, along with 3 others previously identified for a Mandalay street protest. On 5 February headmistress Dr Cho Yu Mon, was arrested and charged under Penal Code Section 505(b) for taking part in a “red ribbon” campaign in her school, Hpa-an Township, Karen State.

This means that there have now been 134 officials/lawmakers and 18 civil society activists detained in relation to the military coup. A total of 152 political detainees since the early hours of 1 February.

There are also reports of various arrests against protestors across the country on 5 February as the civil disobedience campaign continues. In particular 30 people have reportedly been detained in Mandalay for taking part in the “Drumming out of Evil” campaign.
