Karen communities’ search for Government intervention on water issue leads to unjustified charges brought against environmental activist

Karen communities near Hpa-An town have been facing contaminated water since October 2019, which they believe is a result of a coal-fired cement factory’s operations. The villagers first attempted to work with Kayin State Government agencies to find a way to address this situation, but the problem has not been resolved. With no other options, the communities decided to conduct a public prayer ceremony to raise these issues to any other persons or groups that could assist them. Shortly after this event, Myanmar Police moved to detain one of the coordinators of this event, environmental and human rights activist Saw Tha Phoe.

၂၀၁၉ ခုနှစ်၊ အောက်တိုဘာလမှစပြီး ဘားအံမြို့အနီးရှိ ကျေးရွာနှင့်လူထုများသည် ရေထုညစ်ညမ်းမှုနှင့် ရင်ဆိုင်လာခဲ့ရသည်။ ဤရေထုညစ်ညမ်းမှုမှာ ကျောက်မီးသွေးလောင်စာသုံးဘိလပ်မြေစက်ရုံလုပ်ငန်းကြောင့်ဟု ရွာသူရွာသားများက ယုံကြည်ကြသည်။ ရေထုညစ်ညမ်းမှုစတင်ဖြစ်ပွားစဥ်အစောပိုင်းကာလ၌ ရွာသူရွာသား များသည် ကရင်ပြည်နယ်အစိုးရဌာနများနှင့်လက်တွဲပူးပေါင်းပြီး ရေညစ်ညမ်းမှုပြဿနာကို ဖြေရှင်းနိုင်ရန်အား ထုတ်ခဲ့သော်လည်း ပြဿနာကို မဖြေရှင်းနိုင်ခဲ့ပါ။ နောက်ဆုံး၌ ရွာသူရွာသားများသည် ၎င်းတို့ရင်ဆိုင်နေရသော အခက်အခဲကို အများပြည်သူနှင့် ၎င်းတို့ကိုကူညီပံ့ပိုးနိုင်သည့်အစုအဖွဲ့များသိအောင် ကျေးရွာများစွာပါ၀င်သည့် စုပေါင်းဆုတောင်းပွဲအစီအစဥ်ကို ပြုလုပ်ခဲ့သည်။ အဆိုပါစုပေါင်းဆုတောင်းပွဲပြုလုပ်ပြီးနောက်ပိုင်း မကြာခင်မှာ ပင် ဆုတောင်းပွဲတွင်တက်ရောက်ပြီး ပူးပေါင်းပါ၀င်ခဲ့သူများထဲက တစ်ဦးဖြစ်သည့်သဘာ၀ပတ်၀န်းကျင်နှင့် လူ့အခွင့်အရေးအတွက်တက်ကြွလှုပ်ရှားသူစောသာဘိုးအားရဲများကဖမ်းဆီးရန် လုပ်ဆောင်လာပါတော့သည်။
