The Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK expresses its sincere gratitude to the government of the Maldives for joining the genocide case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The Maldives has announced it has hired the high profile lawyer Amal Clooney to file a written declaration of intervention at the ICJ.

The Gambia last year brought charges against Myanmar that it is in breach of the Genocide Convention. The Court in January issued four provisional measures against the government of Myanmar, essentially legal orders to comply with the Genocide Convention. The government of Myanmar has to report back to the Court in May on its compliance.

While many countries have expressed moral and political support for the case and the ICJ provisional measures, the Maldives is the first nation to provide concrete, practical support.

“Once again we see how a small nation like the Maldives shows the moral courage to stand up against genocide. On behalf of all Rohingya people, we can’t thank the Maldives enough for this solidarity and support. This provides a glimmer of hope in a dark time when the Rohingyas’ survival is at stake,” said Tun Khin, President BROUK.

“The Maldives’ actions put more powerful countries, including members of the UN Security Council, to shame. The international community must stop paying lip service to human rights and instead act to end this unfolding genocide.”
