As Chambers of Commerce representing responsible European investors, we are concerned about the open-ended shutdown of the internet in nine conflict-affected townships in Rakhine State and Chin State since 21st June 2019.
This shutdown affects as many as one million people in those townships, thereby negatively affecting the local economy and society. We urge the Myanmar authorities to consider the internet shutdown also from the perspective of possible reputational impact in the international community and view of Myanmar as a responsible investment destination. Especially in light of human rights concerns expressed by the UN and concerned governments, we hope that the internet access is quickly restored.
