Local EU Statement on the Myanmar Military’s Admission of Extrajudicial Killings of 10 Muslim Villagers in Rakhine State

The European Union Delegation, the Heads of Mission of EU member states accredited to Myanmar and the Head of Mission of Norway issue the following statement in Myanmar

The Myanmar military admitted for the first time the extrajudicial killings of 10 Muslim villagers whose bodies had been discovered in a mass grave near Inn Din village, Maungdaw district.

These brutal killings confirm the urgent need for a thorough and credible investigation into all violent incidents in northern Rakhine State to ensure the accountability of those found responsible for committing atrocities. Impunity of perpetrators of such serious human rights violations must end.

Therefore the EU reiterates its call on the Government of Myanmar to cooperate fully with the Human Rights Council’s independent international fact-finding mission and other independent observers including journalists and to provide for their full, safe and unhindered access to all conflict areas without delay.
