“Calling for emergency aid for the flood-affected people of Karenni State”

Starting from the 9th of September 2024, continuous rainfall over the course of a week in Karenni State has caused widespread flooding and landslides in several regions. People in Hpruso township, Loikaw township, Demoso township, and Shadaw township are currently facing the impacts of flooding and landslides. Villages, internally displace (IDPs) camps, farmlands, and plantations have been submerged, causing significant destruction.

The Karenni Interim Executive Council (IEC), through its Department of Humanitarian and Rehabilitation, is working in coordination with relevant stakeholders to respond and provide emergency relief to those affected by the floods.

In Phe Kon Township, over 2,600 people from three IDP camps have been affected by the flooding. Additionally, in the village of TeKyate, landslides triggered by heavy rains caused the deaths of three individuals and destroyed around 25 houses.

In Loikaw Township, the SAC has released additional water from the Moe Bye dam, exacerbating the flooding. The flood has affected three villages and one IDP camp, displacing approximately 5,000 people. The flooding has also resulted in the destruction of over 3,000 acres of rice fields.

In Demosoe Township, about 10,000 residents, including IDP, have been affected. Seven IDP camps have been flooded, forcing residents to relocate to temporary shelters. Landslides and flooding have destroyed around 1,000 acres of rice fields, along with other crops such as beans and sesame.

In Hpruso Township, continuous rains have caused a landslide in one village, destroying a community hall and a warehouse for rice storage. The landslide has created fissures in the ground, leading to the destruction of 30 houses and emergency displacing about 200 people, who have been relocated to a safer place for temporary shelters. The flooding and landslides have also destroyed roads and bridges, making transportation difficult for residents and the 10,000 displaced people.

In Shadaw or Somopraysoeleh Township, the rising waters of the Pon Chaung River have submerged the villages of Su Phe Lot, Naw Plu, and Pon Chaung, along with a refugee camp. Around 1,335 people have been displaced, with their homes and property submerged or destroyed. Due to the flooding, displaced people are facing difficulties such as inadequate food, clothing, and shelter. The flooding has also caused damage and losses to crops that were cultivated along the riverbanks.

Immediate Needs for the Flood-Affected People:

  1. Provision of Basic Food Supplies

There is an urgent need for basic food supplies, such as rice, oil, salt, and beans, for the 28,735 displaced people currently residing in temporary shelters.

  1. Provision of Hygiene Kits

For the 5,747 displaced households, there is an urgent need for hygiene kits, including soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, clothing, and sanitary items, as well as clean drinking water.

  1. Temporary Shelter Materials

For the 5,747 displaced households, materials such as tarpaulins, bamboo, and zinc sheets are urgently needed to construct temporary shelters.
