1. RESEARCH INTERN JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title : Research Intern
Reports to : Research Officer
Job location : Mae Sot, Thailand
Start Date : July 2017
Contract Duration : Three months with possibility of extension dependent on performance

Overview of Progressive Voice

Progressive Voice (PV) is a participatory rights-based policy research and advocacy organization rooted in civil society, maintaining strong networks and relationships with grassroots organizations and community-based organizations throughout Myanmar. It acts as a bridge to the national policy makers, international community and international policymakers, amplifying voices from the ground, and advocating for a rights-based policy narrative.

Job Purpose

To support the Progressive Voice team working closely with the Research Officer.
To assist with research and develop written materials in English about pressing developments in Myanmar.

Duties and Responsibilities

This post will focus on contributing to PV’s research areas relating to human rights in Myanmar. The position involves assisting the Research Officer in developing position papers, and other written materials as well as providing logistical support in research projects. The assistant will need to demonstrate commitment to Progressive Voice’s approach and values.

1. Research and develop written materials for PV and partners

  • Under the guidance of the Research Officer, contribute to the production of Weekly Highlights, website content, and other written materials as needed
  • Under the guidance of the Research Officer, work with relevant partners to develop position papers, briefing papers, especially in response to rapidly changing situations in Myanmar
  • Proofread and edit press releases, media advisories, reports, briefing papers and other written materials in English language

2. Research background information

  • Collate relevant information regarding human rights and ongoing developments in Myanmar
  • Maintain up-to-date information on developments in Myanmar and the region, as well as relevant international news relating to Myanmar

3. Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

Essential

  • Strong oral communication and written skills in English
  • Strong commitment to and basic understanding of issues in Myanmar
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Proven computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds and language

Desirable

  • Experience in an advocacy, communications or campaign role in a non-profit organization
  • Experience working on campaigns in Myanmar’s democracy movement
  • Experience living and/or working in conflict-affected communities
  • Language abilities in Thai, Burmese or any ethnic language from Myanmar a plus
